George Rothman has been recognized as one of today's most serious and gifted conductors. Music Director and Conductor of New York's acclaimed Riverside Symphony, he has won consistent praise from New York's foremost critics. In addition, his recordings of contemporary orchestral works with the Riverside Symphony for Bridge and New World records have earned international praise. His most recent recording of Andrew Imbrie's Requiem was nominated for a 2000 Grammy Award. Mr. Rothman has guest conducted in China, Europe, Japan, Brazil and throughout the United States. Mr. Rothman's passion for discovery is reflected in his premiere performances of well over 100 new orchestral compositions. He has introduced to New York audiences seldom-heard works by composers as diverse as Biber, Haydn, and Sibelius, and has led local premieres of works by Prokofiev, Schumann and Ravel. |
A native of New York City, he trained at the Manhattan School of Music, The Juilliard School, Queens College, and Tanglewood, where he worked with Leonard Bernstein and Seiji Ozawa. From 1988 to 2000 he served as the Director of Music Performance at Columbia University and Conductor of the Columbia University Orchestra. He has also served as Music Director of the Grand Junction (Colorado) Symphony, the Bronx Symphony Orchestra, and Principal Guest Conductor of the Queens Philharmonia Orchestra. |
